Google gonna do evil. Resist.

Do you develop Android Apps? Are they on the Play Store?
Remove them from play. Now. Today. Host them on f-droid. ONLY.
Close your developer account.

Google is about to destroy the android platform. The keepandroidopen.org site does an excellent job of explaining what is at stake.
If you are a developer, do not support this move, neither passively nor actively. Take action. Even just be a clicktavist.

If you are a hardware mfg, de-certify your device. Do not ship any google services.

If you use an Android device, start looking for alternatives. Obviously not iOS, this is the kind of crap they started with and the main reason why Android has been, at least until September, the only broadly adopted mobile platform for anyone who gives the slightest crap about data privacy, freedom, or open platforms.

(There are some degoogled android options like LineageOS and GrapheneOS and even Linux phones like Pinephone that are wonderful, but they aren’t market purchase kind of solutions.)

As a user, you just don’t have many options, which is, of course, the whole point of having a monopoly like Google does.  They can ram horrible profiteering scams down people’s throats and there’s little anyone can do.  The ecosystem is going to be fractured, no matter what.  For now, users can install LineageOS on a number of devices, maybe you are lucky and have one of them. Or, oh the irony, Graphene is runs on pixel devices.  For now. It is a very stable, very solid piece of software that made the absolutely insane, utterly self-destructive decision to support only Google Pixel devices.  Oh, the irony.

In the long run, the world needs a truly free, truly open-source mobile operating system and first class hardware that supports it.  We need a world of users who are actually willing to forego the latest candy and convince to not clutter their lives with corporate spyware and to accept some cost and convenience loss for security and digital autonomy. We need hardware and software vendors that will risk market share by refusing to participate in sales models subsidized by wholesale data theft.

Unfortunately, we’re moving swiftly in the opposite direction.
